I had the pleasure of watching David
Copperfield introduce his Flying Illusion to the public. It was in
Fort Lauderdale
at the Center for the Arts. They were taping the show for a television
special and the audience was treated to a backstage look at the show.
I was in awe by the whole process.

During this show, a number of fantastic illusions
were performed. On TV specials, this very well known performer did the
decapitation of his lovely assistant, a few blockbuster
vanish/relocations, and who among us could forget the ring on wine
glass? A team of professionals carefully chooses these illusions and
their presentations. The process of selection before a special is not
unlike the invasion of a small country.
This said, I must report that during the weekend
after the show aired, the only question they asked, after the
trick, was, “Did you see that guy, what’s his name, fly?”
Forget all the other stuff: that’s what they remembered.
We must conclude from this that the levitation is
strong. The actual mechanics of anti-gravity are very weak. As an
example, I pose the dangling leaf. For those of you who have had the
honor of watching Michael Ammar perform the floating bill, no more
need be said. But I will. Ammar is a profoundly accomplished
performer, but he is an even better teacher. Again, of all the things
he has taught us in classes around the world, the thing that sticks in
my mind is the floating bill. He explains in very thorough detail that
when one does this trick, it should be last and someone should be
outside the door with the motor running. It’s that strong.

The Ultimate in, Practical, Un-assisted Self- Levitation. IMAGINE THIS:
You stand face to face with someone; you’re back to a curb,
step or staircase. Your participant holds his/her hands out,
palms up, while you place your hands, palms down, lightly on top
of theirs. By applying minimal pressure to the spectator’s
hands you are able to apparently levitate up on to the top of
the step. As you levitate and float upward, the participant can
clearly see under both of your feet, seeing both of your heels
and toes rising off of the ground. As if that were not enough,
you then calmly float off of the curb and back down to the
ground and are clean to walk away. That’s right. No get-ready.
No clean up. Anywhere. Anytime. Once the gimmick is assembled at
home, there is nothing else to “set” for a performance. You
can be ready to demonstrate The ICARUS EFFECT without notice.
Like we said… Anywhere. Anytime. With this breakthrough effect
there are no mechanical looking movements whatsoever. If you
could REALLY levitate, this is EXACTLY how it would look. You
perform this levitation literally right under the spectators’
noses and yet you will leave them absolutely stunned. Speed and
height of levitation are under the performer’s control at all
times. Effect is limited only by your imagination. No
electronics, pneumatics or hydraulics of any kind. No wires. No
rigging. No kidding. Included: Instructional DVD (with bonus
ideas) and kit (including space age material) for preparing your
levitation gimmick. You supply necessary clothing. Pre-order
your ICARUS EFFECT today for shipping at the end of September.

What makes it so powerful would escape most
practitioners due to its subtlety. Ammar dissects the effect into its
necessary parts and clearly points out what makes it memorable.
Everyone has seen a leaf or twig hanging in mid air from a spider
thread. It hangs there, floating, levitating, and even a young child
says, “There’s something holding it up, I just can’t see it.”
With that, the air goes out of the magic. There is no effect.
In order to regain
that impact, the floating bill begins with a short story about
American currency. There are tiny silk threads in the paper. (Note
here the use of the word, thread. To me, this is the same as
doing the Super X and saying something like, “…an iron bar twisted
in such a way that it hides from your line of sight.” One might want
to read Edgar Allen Poe’s thoughts on hiding something in plain
sight) These threads, being made of silk, can create static
electricity and much like the balloon that sticks to your shirt, they
do something magical. He doesn’t say what that is yet. When the
dollar bill finally does float in the air, the moment is almost a
throwaway. The performer isn’t even looking at it. This makes the
moment even more powerful because of the old principle of something
happening that the audience can see but the magician doesn’t notice.
