On
a recent trip to a magic shop, I had the opportunity to observe two
boys on a mission to buy some magic apparatus. One of the boys was
interested in a set of Linking Rings, while the other boy did his best
to discourage this purchase. “Everyone knows how it works”, he
kept insisting.
While the dealer did his best to make the sale,
he eventually failed. This is a shame, and happens to classic magic
far too often.
I am aware of the arguments against
using classic effects. The Valentinos, and the Beckers have exposed
the secret on national television, videos, and books as well as
exposure from countless magic sets over the years.
Let’s change our thinking.
So why would any magician, be interested in
learning this effect? The answer is very simple:
The Linking Rings, like the Cups and Balls, is a
complete graduate course in magic. Presentation and misdirection are
the staples of a good ring routine, and the presentation principals
apply equally to any magic you perform which teachers the entire
foundation of magic as a whole.
Learn to do it
your way.
As you have undoubtedly have heard many times
before, don’t copy other performers material. Some of the
recommended sources I will cite are routines, routines developed over
many hard hours of trial and error.
While
all the routines are excellent sources to draw from don’t fall into
the trap of cloning someone else’s material. Make it your own, explore
all the available information and develop your own routine.
If there is a magic club in your area, join it. Every club will
always have members knowledgeable, able and willing to help you with
your magic.
