No. 1446 - The Disembodied Princess:

Thayer's own original and improved sensation. A feature with the Great Thurston Show, Assistant is shackled securely inside a peculiar cabinet - with separate doors for head, legs and body.

Huge metal blades are then thrust through the cabinet entirely - one at position of neck, and the other at the waist. Head and legs of assistant still remain as before, but when center doors of cabinet are opened, front and rear, assistants' body has disappeared completely!

All doors again closed, and assistant reproduced intact. No glass or stage traps, and no dummy legs. Works anywhere - even in a parlor - if you wish...

How's this for exotic and unique! This piece speaks to me! What a rare opportunity to even see one of these pieces, not to mention in it's complete form.

Micro magic at it's best - from our friends at Magic Wagon!

Effect: A beautifully decorated cabinet along with a pencil are displayed (a borrowed pencil can be used). A pencil is placed on a stand and a cabinet is placed over, leaving both ends of the pencil in full view. The performer then pulls the center section of the cabinet straight up, opens the front door of the cabinet and the middle section of the pencil is completely GONE!

He is then removed the back door and the audience can see right THROUGH the cabinet! The performer then waves his hand behind the pencil, shows both sides of the cabinet and the pencil's middle is simply not there. It's a great miniature illusion.

The method is very old but it is still one of the very best optical sciences ever created. And, due to the method used, the illusion is best viewed from at least 8 feet away.

Each cabinet is delicately hand-crafted from genuine teak and nicely adorned with brass hardware.

Due to the level of complexity and amount of work involved, this specific item is offered only in a limited quantity.

The Magician shows a colored ball and drops it into a paper bag NOT shown previously empty. Claiming extraordinary powers he states that he will change the ball's color.

Making a magical gesture over the bag, he removes a ball of a different color and tells everyone that it is the original ball. Stating that the process is reversible, he returns the ball to the bag and with another mystic pass removes a ball of the original color. This is repeated as the audience expresses that the performer has been switching the balls and that there are really TWO in the bag, not one.

The performer admits this is true but explains that the second ball has nothing to do with the magic. He removes the "extra" ball showing that it is a golf ball!

The Rabbini folder is opened again and he's holding an W. Ta-Dah! What? That's not the card? No problem for the Great Rabbini. Slowly the card ROTATES in his hand and becomes a M. Ta-Dah times two!

Imagine this effect! A bottle of Coca Cola is placed in a cabinet, the front and top doors of which are closed. A solid steel examined rod is shoved through holes at the side of the box - completely through the bottle (which is lifted out of the cabinet and shown, revealing the fact that the steel rod does actually penetrate the bottle). The bottle is replaced in the ox, the rod withdrawn (and again examined, if desired), and the bottle remove unharmed. The bottle may be filled with real Coca Cola which, when the bottle is u uncapped, is poured out at the end of the trick. Do it any time, anywhere, no special conditions needed.

Spread a deck of cards face up on the table and ask a spectator to look at any card. No one else could possibly know the card because he never touches or names it. You concentrate, then slowly but surely "read his mind" and name the card!

You can repeat it immediately and it will become even more baffling. In fact, even if several people simultaneously look at different cards you can read each person's mind and name his card correctly every time! The strongest card tricks most often depend on a stack or special deck. Unfortunately, if you start with a gaffed deck, as soon as you have accomplished the impossible feat, its very strength causes audiences to say, "Let me see those cards!" With a deck switch, they can, because you just switched the gaffed deck for a normal one, which they can even take home! A deck switch can also allow you to start with an ordinary deck, convince everyone it's you and not the cards causing the magic-then you switch in your gaffed or stacked deck and unleash a stunning effect. Deck switches can create extraordinary, incomprehensible effects-as long as the switch isn't detected or suspected.

And there lies the challenge. Everyone knows about switching decks. We've all heard that card cheats do it, and magicians. In reality, though, very few magicians switch decks, because it is commonly perceived as too difficult to get away with. And since everyone knows about switching decks, even a suspicion that a deck switch might have occurred can completely undermine a performance. Therefore, if you use any deck switch, it must be not only imperceptible, but also unimaginable.

It was called Etherica. At least that's what Randolph Geran called the strange looking device he created to tap the aether's energy and convert it into a usable power source. But some who saw Geran's 1910 prototype called it a "fool's folly," and dismissed it as a waste of time and effort.

Geran was determined to prove them wrong. After all, his invention was solidly based on the well-respected research and writings of Hendrik Braun. True Etherica resembled the turn of the century machines Loritz and others built to harness ambient electricity in the aether, but it did something its rivals didn't: it worked.

Geran was vexed by the device's mysterious behavior, which he carefully observed, making copious notes that included all the variables he could think of, from time of day to the temperature of the room. He even moved the model to different areas of the house and still it retained its random nature. Close friends and family members feared that Geran was becoming so obsessed that his reason was in jeopardy.

Finally, when science could yield no answer, Geran began to suspect that perhaps some sort of metaphysical factor was causing the machine to operate. Indeed, often when alone at night, Geran saw Etherica's light flicker and immediately felt he was being watched by another presence in the room. Was it just a passing field of negative ions moving around the earth? Or was it something else, something far beyond the ability of man's mind to grasp?

On one occasion Geran placed a locket with a picture of his beloved mother inside by Etherica. Later, back from an evening out, he found the light glowing brightly. He stood transfixed for several moments. basking in its brilliance and warmed by the sense that his mother was there. That's when Geran knew the truth; he knew the origin of the energy that made the lamp work, and took that secret to the grave with him.

The image of the gypsy is only on one side of the card. You are able to change the face from cursed to beautiful by just holding it in your fingers. It can be done right in front of your audience.

The change can be almost instant from bad to good. This allows for a very good "dual reality" presentation. Show the bad gypsy to one person and ask them to remember the details of what they saw. Seconds later show the same card, same image to a second person and ask them to remember what they saw. One will see a horrible face and one will see a beautiful face. The good image will slowly change back to ugly by itself. You can actually watch the image change. You can also go from the beautiful face to the cursed face. There is only one side of the card with the image. That image changes.No switching of cards, no flipping the card over.

In a small attempt to obtain more needed space in the Dungeon, our client has decided to divest himself of his personal complete set of the ORIGINAL issues of The New Invocation. This means Issue Number 1 (October 1979) to Issue Number 64 (August 1991). Not a reproduction or reprint but the real thing.

Please note that Issues 1 through 55 are hole punched on the left. This was how they came. Also Issue 55 is the last one where the Shuttered Room is signed by Masklyn ye Mage. Issues 56 to 64 are not punched and were the start of the DH era. If there were issues after that, I never received them - I wonder why??? Included are the original Indexes compiled by Scott Gordon.

They are really a treasure trove of unusual thinking, effects, reviews and a true peek into what in now called Bizarre Magick. Plus its fun seeing how youthful a lot of people looked back then. And some of the name changes that took place are pretty interesting as well.

All are in very good condition other than being read by myself, and the natural ageing of the paper on the edges. The issues are in two of the Original beige loose-leaf binders with the Fabian silk screen Mage casting the spell on the cover. And yes the Fabian illustrations throughout the issues are great!

There are three bonus collectibles I'm throwing in. One is a loose print by Fabian of "Why Tom Palmer Quit Magic". The other is the hand engrossed and silk-screened welcome to the 1988 Invocational in Chicago complete with burned edges.

But there's more! The ticket with assigned seat number for the Saturday night show along with the liability release for Tony and Ross Johnson. Yes, this was the fabled ritual "shew" in the basement of the Bismark Hotel where the lay audience had been kept in the dark (pitch black) for over an hour before the rituals began. The rats running around in the dark were real. And to make it real is the Black Booklet of the Kabalistic Ritual that was used with the responses that were given by our group to scare the heck out of the lay people. It has the silver embossed seal of the Esoteric Order of Pan on the cover.
