Harry Blackstone Jr – Original Show Orchestrations – Circa 1978
The case holding the orchestrations, or “charts”, measures approximately 14″ square and weighs approximately 22 lbs.. It is a “fiber” style case, packed with the musical charts and folders, some with penciled-in margin notes by various musicians under the direction of conductor Chuck Bird. Most of the music was arranged specifically for Harry Jr. by noted orchestral arranger Hal Hidey.
Harry was one of the last touring illusionists to perform to the accompaniment of a live orchestra. In each city, most of the “back line” artists were hired through the local musician’s union. The individual charts for each instrument, were then arranged in show-order, and placed in the brown folders. Most of the charts are loose, since the content of the show and it’s running order would change on a fairly regular basis, city by city, based on venue limitations, available drape and curtain lines, etc.
These documents date to 1978……one of the most successful periods of Harry Jr’s career as he was destined to present his show at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway. Please note that, even though Harry passed away in 1997, these arrangements are still protected by copyright.
